MEREAN covers all types of major news media sources.
Each publication is scanned cover-to-cover, and each item is counted — from the largest above-the-fold headline story to the smallest classified ad. Each item is archived and metatagged by trained staff members. The metatags are in categories and sub-categories, and undergo quality control for accuracy. Basic bibliographic data is noted, relaying key information such as publication name, date, article headline, etc. Keywords relating to who/what/when/where are extracted so that people, places, organizations, and topics can be added to the database and searched. All articles have metadata, abstracts, and OCR versions.
Over 1,300 newspapers/magazines are monitored daily and at least 30% of them have no Internet presence.
Over 1,500 websites are monitored and millions of social media postings are collected daily. Most metadata is automatically extracted and then undergoes a quality control process that includes automation and random human checks for accuracy. Related Print and Internet articles are linked together. Full HTML coding is captured, including text, layout, images, and style.
Programs are collected, documented, and archived. Monitored programs include news reports, talk shows, entertainment, sports, and even advertising. There is a focus on political, economic, and religious/cultural programming. All news broadcasts are fully processed. All monitored shows include Abstracts and a Full Index for searching.
Over 450 currently active TV channels and radio stations are monitored daily.
The Middle East Media Database consists of profiles or portfolios of journalists, public figures, and organizations covered extensively from MENA media. Each profile contains an individual biography or an overview of an organization and indexes of the related media. Quantitative and qualitative media analysis provides unparalleled insight into what transpires over time. Original clips are available.
The Journalist & Public Figure Database is composed of profiles of more than 50,000 individuals, with indexes of what each has published or broadcast and what has been published or broadcast about them. Media-related personalities include journalists, columnists, publishers, editors, or political cartoonists. Public figures come from the world of politics, economy, culture, religion, athletics, and entertainment.
The Organization Database is composed of profiles of more than 13,000 media outlets and economic or political entities, with both broad and deep information about their activities as covered in the MENA media. Information is updated as often as new coverage appears in the media and new names are added as they rise in influence.
More than 100 analysts in the in-house Media Intelligence Center round out the profiles with comparative quantitative measures and sentiment from editorials and opinion pieces.
